Iceland is in the process of re-writing their very own sporting history books as they progressed to the knock out stages of the Euro 2016.
The team booked their spot in the knockout stages on Wednesday, 22 June 2016 after they defeated Austria 2-1. A stoppage-time winner awarded Iceland the well-deserved victory.
It is the first appearance for Iceland at a major football tournament, and they are the smallest nation to ever qualify for the championships. They are expected to meet England in their first knockout match.
Austria entered the game against Iceland after a defeat against Hungary and a draw against Portugal. They were in great hope to pull off the victory against Iceland, but it was not meant to be. Austria have failed to make it through the opening stages of a major tournament since 1982.
Iceland finished second in group F with 5 points, behind Hungary who clinched the top spot on goal difference. Portugal who finished in third place in group f, will also advance to the knockout stages as one of the best third place teams.
If Iceland manage to up their vibrant team spirit may be able to give England a tough time. However, regardless of the outcome with England, Iceland will certainly have plenty to celebrate.Categories: News
