Teenage prodigy, Denis Shapovalov is the new Canadian tennis youngster ripping up the tennis court. At only 18 years old, Shapovalov is the second youngest player to ever beat world number 2 Rafael Nadal in his first match against anyone in the top 10. Unfortunately, he was then knocked out in the last 16 of the Rogers Cup, losing to world number 8, Alexander Zverev Jr.
While he still ranks far from even the top 20 for now, Shapovalov is the youngest player ranked in the world top 200. This is a colossal leap from the 143rd spot, where he started at the beginning of the year. This mean-teen, serving-machine most likely gets his tennis genes from his mother, who was also a professional tennis player. Tessa Shapovalov played for the Soviet Union national team.
Denis Shapovalov’s game is far beyond his years and is certainly a keen tennis-talent to keep your eyes on. Expect this year’s surprise dark-horse to come out the blocks like a bat out of hell against any top seed player. Having already proved he can do the business against Rafael Nadal, he will want to build on this success. As cliché as it may sound, with all to play for, the ball is most certainly in Shapovalov’s court.
While fight fans around the world wait in eager anticipation for what is turning out to be the biggest spectacle in the fighting fraternity, the haymaker punch seems to be the obvious oversight we’ve all made before. Floyd Mayweather will meet Connor McGregor on 26 August 2017 in a format that likely suits the undefeated champion, who will be looking to take his tally up to 50-0.
One obvious oversight that almost everyone seems to be overlooking is the almost-fact that we’ll all be watching a fight we’ve seen before. While anything could still happen on the night, we’ll see nothing new that we didn’t already see in what was called the “Fight of the Century” between Mayweather and Pacquiao. The fight did everything but live up to any of its expectations and would probably not go down in the history books as the “Fight of the Century”, but rather the “Hype of the Century”.
This pre-fight hype is something we’re all already experiencing with the Mayweather vs. McGregor news conference tour. The two have been seen to be exchanging not so cheap gimmicks. While the Pacquiao fight didn’t seem to draw as much attention as the McGregor fight, it was more touted for its pure fight value rather than its spectacle value like with Mayweather vs. McGregor. The two have been touring and promoting their fight in an almost parade like fashion, boasting about either how much money they have, their dress sense or lack thereof and, finally, fight predictions.
While it may prove more interesting to score their verbal encounters, scoring their actual fight night on the 26th would prove both redundant and well, predictable. Mayweather has infamously mastered the art of the shoulder roll, and his defensive ability will once again prove too strong for McGregor’s relentless and fierce attack. Although both have predicted knockout wins, true boxing fans will know that McGregor will be a fish out of water when he meets Mayweather in the square ring. What you can definitely expect from both fighters is some showboating and hopefully a few good combinations, but a knockout seems rather unlikely right now.
Overall, if Mayweather’s last three fights have been anything near entertaining for fight fans and even neutrals, then this will be a show worth watching. For those who have seen it and gotten the t-shirt, you’d be better off watching the highlights of the fight’s best moments as both fighters will certainly showcase their respective abilities. Mayweather’s flawless defence is still an art worth admiring along with McGregor’s ruthless attack will all make for a worthwhile highlights package at the end of it all.
The advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been broadly explored the past few decades. However, the greatest breakthrough in AI experiments came through recently.
AI and its application to the game of poker are the focus of research for two Carnegie Mellon University scholars. Computer Science professor, Tuomas Sandholdm and Ph.D. student Noam Brown, developed an AI program that is capable of beating out top professional poker players.
To put the invention to the test, Libratus, the name of the program is known by, took on four season poker players in a 20 day No Limit Hold’em heads-up match. He took on Jimmy Chou, Dong Kim, Jason Les, and Daniel McAulay. Libratus managed to beat them all out by ending the tournament with $1.7 million worth of chips.
At first, Libratus had difficulty sorting through imperfect information, while trying to detect whether his opponents were bluffing. This is because Libratus has been developed to deploy a different kind of approach to the game of poker, in comparison to previous AI products.
After each day Libratus would analyse his strategy used throughout the day with the use of a complex meta-algorithm. He also explored the holes his opponents had spotted in his behavior during a round of poker. From here, he would prioritize these behaviours and improve on the three most obvious behaviours.
Libratus was able to self-improve his gameplay each day and his ability to identify the presence and essence of holes in his own strategy are what has made Libratus’s ability ground-breaking.
This has left Libratus for the time being the most proficient program in heads-up No-Limit Hold’em games. However, the more players at one poker table does mean more possible outcomes. Effectively, this does provide more of a challenge for the AI program to go for the best possible moves.
